DOM referesh after javascript manipluation IE&Chrome

Dears,

The scenario i'm trying to do is like this:
I have functionality to generate PDF files for linked documents in a publication. i want to show counter through the execution so i can know progress (like: processedNo. from totalNo. i.e.: 5 from 10). i tried to show this progress counter using a hidden text box. I unhide it when starting executing, show the counter and then hide it again.

this mechanism works fine on Firefox, but on IE, chrome and safari the field is not shown at all and even the value is not changed. After many tests and googling, it appears there's some problem related to DOM refresh in IE and Chrome, and that's whay i can't get the desired result (i can see the output if i used alert message after each change i do to the text box).

so please, any one have suggestion or idea how to overcome this issue?
thank in advance.
